The Rough Luxe hotel has become an important component of London’s creative industries. Conveniently located minutes from King’s Cross station and at the heart of a burgeoning district of galleries, museums, bars and cafés; designers and creatives are drawn to the ‘rough luxury’ of the hotel’s aesthetics. The Grade II listed building was transformed by interior designer and friend of Will Alsop, Rabih Hage, in 2008.

Limited scope for expansion led to Will Alsop’s design concept: ‘living out of a suitcase.’ A series of pods have been engineered to rest on stilts in a narrow space at the rear of the hotel. Their design detail is such that they resemble compact, sleek products or pieces of furniture. They are essentially elevated self-contained bedroom suites and are designed to have minimal impact on neighbouring properties.
